ALONE receives increased number of calls from older people regarding mental health difficulties stemming from cocooning

ALONE, the organisation which supports older people, has voiced its concern regarding the impact of cocooning measures on older people’s mental health. In the past ten days, 62% of practical support requests made to ALONE’s national COVID-19 helpline were in relation to social isolation and loneliness. The organisation has renewed their calls for a national strategy on loneliness in order to tackle the issue on a long-term basis, both during the pandemic and after it has subsided.

ALONE, Gavin James and Bonfire team up for the launch of the charity’s ‘Now more than ever’ video campaign

ALONE, the organisation which supports older people, have teamed up with Gavin James and Bonfire Dublin to release their ‘Now more than ever’ campaign, a series of short videos on loneliness featuring Gavin James’s music, which call on members of the public to stay in touch with the older people they know who may be feeling lonely whilst cocooning. ALONE calls for long-term reform of supports for older people in light of COVID-19 crisis

ALONE, the organisation that supports older people, has called for urgent action to support the nursing home and home support sectors amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and for long-term reform of health services to better meet the support needs of older people. The organisation has said that years of consistent underfunding and underinvestment in home care and nursing homes has impacted both sectors’ ability to cope with the COVID-19 crisis, and that support for older people must be prioritised both now and after the crisis has passed.

The company is providing financial support to community organisations who are providing critical services, with ALONE receiving €150,000 to support their work with older people.

ALONE, the organisation which supports older people, while welcoming the sentiment expressed in the Policy Framework for a new Government released by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael earlier today, is seeking further commitment on key areas pertinent to older people. The organisation notes the strong elements on social justice but would call on a stronger commitment to the National Positive Ageing Strategy, more commitment to housing with supports for older people and to expedite the actions outlined in Sláintecare.

ALONE: Cocooning brings to light increasing and ongoing levels of loneliness and isolation among older people

The organisation is asking families to reach out by phone or use technology to stay in touch with their older relatives, neighbours and friends.

Irish Travel Agents Association announces new dates for events postponed due to COVID-19
