Get a taste of track cycling at StreetVelodrome Dublin City

Pop up velodrome comes to Smithfield Square for 2 days of FREE family fun

 

Dublin City Council presents StreetVelodrome Dublin City, as part of National Bike Week 2017, this Sunday 11th June and Monday 12th June in Smithfield Square, Dublin 7. This free two day family friendly event will include live entertainment, kids’ activities and exciting track cycling races!

Sarah Scannell, Cycling Officer for Dublin City Council, speaking at the launch of StreetVelodrome Dublin City, commented “Dublin City Council is delighted to kick off Bike Week 2017 with this exciting cycling event. We encourage people of all ages and abilities to come to down to Smithfield Square this weekend to try out the pop up velodrome, watch the races and enjoy the lively street entertainment.”

 

On Sunday, 11th June, Dublin will host the first round of the Viking StreetVelodrome Series, a touring competition which sees professional riders competing for gold, silver and bronze medals at events held across the UK and Ireland. Spectators are encouraged to come along and cheer on Team Dublin elite racers Glyn O’Brien and Michelle Muldoon in the professional race at 2pm.

 

Amateur cyclists of all ages are also invited to participate in competitions running throughout the day. Children aged 3 to 11 year olds can participate in the awesome Sharks v Tigers competition and exciting young local cycling talent will be showcased in the DeNovo NexGen Series for 12 to 16 year olds. These races are FREE to participate in, with equipment and professional coaching provided, but as there are a limited number of spaces available they will be allocated on a first come first served basis on the day.

 

Carl Thompson, Director of the Viking StreetVelodrome Series, commented “We are so thrilled to be bringing the Viking StreetVelodrome Series to Dublin City for the first time ever. Ireland has such a rich history of cycling and a real love for the sport. We are looking forward to meeting lots of local cyclists over the weekend, and introducing them to this exciting family friendly activity.”

 

The televised race day in Smithfield Square will be accompanied by family entertainment including the Wobbly Circus’ colourful street performers, face painting, balloon modelling and a cycling village where cyclists can pick up bike care tips.

 

On Monday 12th June, StreetVelodrome Dublin City will be open to schools and the general public. Cycling enthusiasts are invited to come along to Smithfield Square and test out their skills on the velodrome which will be open from 3pm to 6pm – no booking required! Bikes, helmets and professional coaching will all be provided.
